Cảnh Hưng Thông Bảo cash coins were produced throughout the extraordinarily long reign of Emperor Lê Hiển Tông, who nominally ruled from 1740 to 1786 under the Lê dynasty while real power was held entirely by the Trịnh lords. The "Thái" mint mark identifies production at the Thái Nguyên provincial mint, one of several regional casting operations authorized as central authority fragmented. Barker's classification separates these provincial issues carefully, as alloy quality and module size vary enough between mints to matter for attribution.
