| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by four Chinese characters cast in clerical script (lishu), reading clockwise from the top: 開 (Kai), 元 (Yuan), 通 (Tong), 寶 (Bao), meaning 'Inaugural Currency of the Kai Yuan era.' The characters are arranged in the four cardinal positions relative to the central hole, with the field flat and unadorned. A raised inner rim borders the square perforation, and a broad outer rim frames the entire design. The coin exhibits a green-brown patina consistent with aged bronze, with moderate surface granularity typical of Tang Dynasty cast coinage. |
