| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim, with four Chinese characters in clerical script (lishu) arranged in cruciform fashion and read top-to-bottom, right-to-left: 開 (Kai) at top, 元 (Yuan) at bottom, 通 (Tong) at right, and 寶 (Bao) at left. The characters are boldly rendered in sunken relief against a flat field, separated by the central void. A plain raised outer rim borders the coin. |
