| Obverse description | Four Chinese characters rendered in clerical script (lishu) are arranged radially around the central square perforation, read clockwise from top: 開 (Kai), 元 (Yuan), 寶 (Bao), 通 (Tong), forming the inscription 開元通寶 (Kaiyuan Tongbao). The characters are boldly cast in high relief against a flat field, with a raised inner rim encircling the square hole and a raised outer rim bordering the coin. The calligraphic style is attributed to the celebrated Tang calligrapher Ouyang Xun, displaying characteristic clerical script proportions with precise, angular strokes. |
