The obverse bears the four-character inscription 開元通寶 (Kai Yuan Tong Bao) rendered in clerical script (lishu), arranged in cruciform order around the square hole: 開 above, 元 below, 通 to the right, and 寶 to the left. The characters are bold and well-defined in relief against a flat, unadorned field. No inner or outer rim decoration is present beyond the raised lip at the coin's edge. The surfaces display a natural dark brown patina with areas of green cuprite consistent with age. |
