The Kaiyuan Tongbao series, inaugurated in 621 under Tang Gaozu, became the template for Chinese cash coinage for over a thousand years — the round-with-square-hole format and the weight standard it established outlasted the dynasty itself by centuries. The "anonymous" issues of the late Tang period, produced after central authority had fractured among regional warlords, are distinguished from imperial issues primarily by mint marks and incuse symbols added to the reverse. The crescent mark paired with the "Lan" designation on this type is associated with a specific secondary mint whose exact location remains debated in the literature.
