| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised inner rim and plain field. Four Chinese characters in clerical script (lishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 開 (Kai) at top, 元 (Yuan) at bottom, 通 (Tong) at right, and 寶 (Bao) at left. The characters are boldly cast in relief with well-defined strokes typical of late Tang dynasty coinage. A plain outer rim borders the entire design. |
