| Reverse description | Plain flat field surrounding the central square perforation, which is framed by a raised square inner rim. A single Chinese character 福 (Fu, meaning 'fortune' or 'prosperity') appears in regular script (kaishu) in one of the quadrants adjacent to the central hole, with its position varying by variety — above, below, or to the right of the square hole depending on the specific Hartill subtype. The remainder of the reverse field is unadorned, enclosed by a broad raised outer rim consistent with standard Tang dynasty cash coinage. |
