Pietro Loredano served as the last Venetian Governor of Cyprus before the Ottoman invasion of 1570, making coins struck under his administration among the final issues of nearly a century of Venetian rule on the island. The Ottomans took Nicosia in September 1570 and Famagusta — after a brutal eleven-month siege — in August 1571, effectively ending Venetian Cyprus entirely. Carzie were the lowest denomination in Venetian Cypriot circulation, struck in debased billon to facilitate small transactions in a colonial economy.
