Bulgaria's hunters' and anglers' unions have periodically issued their own scrip-style vouchers — functional within the club network for settling dues, entry fees, and equipment exchanges. This "Carp" note is denominated in a fish rather than a currency unit, placing it firmly in the tradition of novelty or internal barter instruments that circulate outside the national banking system entirely.
The carp (шаран) is the dominant freshwater sport fish in Bulgarian angling culture, particularly in Danubian and reservoir fishing. Denominating in the species itself is a dry joke with real utility behind it.
