Ramon Perellos y Roccaful served as Grand Master from 1697 to 1720, one of the longer tenures of the period, during which the Order maintained its precarious position as a naval power operating from Malta while the Ottoman threat had largely shifted from existential to chronic. The carlino was a small fractional silver denomination with roots in southern Italian monetary systems, carried into Hospitaller coinage through the Order's long administrative entanglement with Neapolitan and Aragonese monetary convention.

Perellos was a Spaniard — unusual at a time when French candidates increasingly dominated Grand Mastership elections — and his reign saw significant diplomatic friction with Louis XIV over the Order's neutrality obligations.
