Obverse description Central field displays the crowned oval shield bearing the eight-pointed cross of the Order of St. John, flanked symmetrically by decorative palm branches extending outward on either side. The crown above the shield is rendered in fine relief with clearly delineated points. A circular legend in Latin runs along the inner border of the milled edge, naming the Grand Master. The overall composition is well-centred and characteristic of the milled Maltese coinage of the early eighteenth century.
