Hugues Loubenx de Verdala served as Grand Master of the Order from 1581 until his death in 1595, but the carlino bearing his name was struck only within a narrow window before the Order's Maltese mint restructured its smaller silver denominations. Verdala was an ambitious political operator — he secured a cardinal's hat from Sixtus V in 1587, making him one of the very few Grand Masters to hold that rank simultaneously, and the timing likely marks the closing boundary of this issue.
The carlino itself derives from the Neapolitan monetary tradition the Order absorbed through its long administrative ties to southern Italy.
