Obverse description Central device features a crowned escutcheon bearing a double-headed eagle displayed, the arms of Grand Master Giovanni Paolo Lascaris Castellar, rendered in the hammered style typical of Hospitaller coinage of the mid-seventeenth century. The shield is surmounted by a crown with visible pearl ornamentation. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading the Grand Master's name and titles, interrupted by a cross pattée at the top. The fields are slightly uneven, consistent with hand-struck production. The overall composition is well-centered for a hammered issue of this period.

Reverse description Central device displays the eight-pointed cross of the Order of St. John — the Cross of Malta — borne on a cartouche-shaped shield with ornate lobed surround, filling the majority of the field. The cross arms are boldly rendered with splayed terminals. A circular Latin legend surrounds the device, invoking Saint John the Baptist, the patron of the Order, with a cross pattée serving as a stops divider at the top. A beaded or denticulated border frames the entire design. The reverse is characteristic of Hospitaller devotional iconography consistently employed throughout the Grand Mastership coinage of Malta.
