Sint Maarten began issuing its own coins only after the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010, when the island became a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Caribbean guilder replaced the Netherlands Antillean guilder at par, though the currency circulates alongside the US dollar so routinely that many residents rarely handle guilder coinage at all.
Willem-Alexander acceded in April 2013 following Beatrix's abdication — the first Dutch king in over a century.
