Tajima Province, tucked along the Sea of Japan coast in what is now northern Hyogo Prefecture, was one of dozens of domains authorized to issue silver currency during the late Edo period as the Tokugawa monetary system buckled under chronic silver shortages and trade pressures following the arrival of Western ships. The nanryōgin designation — literally "southern quantity silver" — refers to a class of locally minted bean-shaped silver that circulated as fractional coinage within domain borders, officially sanctioned but effectively a stopgap measure.
The forty-two year production window spans the final turbulent decades before the Meiji government abolished domain currencies outright in 1871.
