Obverse description Irregular, roughly circular hammered gold flan of uniform bright yellow-gold color. At center, a kiri (paulownia) crest appears above the vertical denomination inscription 壹分 (ichibu, 'one bu') in formal kaisho (regular script) Chinese characters. Below and to the left, the mint name 山下 (Yamashita) is struck vertically in the field. The overall design is minimalistic, consistent with the utilitarian aesthetic of Sengoku-period provincial gold coinage from Kai Province.

Additional information

The Ko-Kōkin bu pieces associated with Yamashita are among the gold currency produced under Takeda clan authority in Kai Province — a domain that had developed one of the most sophisticated gold-working traditions in Sengoku-period Japan, drawing directly on the Kōshū gold mines of the region. When Oda Nobunaga destroyed the Takeda in 1582, this entire monetary tradition was abruptly terminated. Surviving examples from that final year carry a historical weight that no grade can quantify.
