Obverse description Left-facing crowned bust of Charles I, draped in armor with a lace collar visible at the neck, his flowing hair falling to the shoulder. The king wears an elaborate crown with fleurs-de-lis and cross-pattée ornaments. The effigy is rendered in high relief in the refined milled style characteristic of engraver Nicolas Briot. A pellet or mintmark initial 'B' appears at the conclusion of the outer Latin legend, which is contained within a beaded inner border.
