Bank Novy Simvol ("Bank New Symbol") was one of hundreds of Russian commercial banks that issued proprietary token coinage during the mid-1990s, a period when the post-Soviet banking sector was largely unregulated and institutions used branded scrip and tokens as promotional instruments or internal accounting units. The practice collapsed along with much of the sector in the 1998 financial crisis, which wiped out a significant portion of Russia's private banks entirely.
