Gregory XI used this issue during the final, turbulent stretch of the Avignon papacy — he was the last French pope, and the bolognino romano was struck both before and immediately after his historic return of the papal court to Rome in 1377, ending nearly seven decades of French exile. The political stakes of that move were enormous; Gregory defied the French crown, most of his cardinals, and Catherine of Siena's relentless letters to make it happen. He died the following year, and the sede vacante that followed triggered the Great Schism.
