Giovanna II's reign was defined almost entirely by factional chaos — she alternated between Aragonese and Angevin claimants as her designated heirs, twice reversing course, leaving the kingdom in near-continuous succession crisis for over two decades. Coinage authority under her rule was fragmented accordingly, with output from the Naples mint reflecting the fiscal instability of a crown perpetually mortgaged to competing dynastic interests.
The bolognino denomination itself was a north Italian import, adopted in the southern kingdom as small-change demand outpaced the supply of heavier silver.
