1 Boliviano Banco Industrial de La Paz

Banco Industrial de La Paz was one of several Bolivian departmental banks operating under the 1890 banking law that permitted provincial institutions to issue their own currency — a decentralized arrangement that collapsed when the Banco de la Nación Boliviana was established in 1911 and assumed sole right of issue. Notes from La Paz-based private banks of this period were often under-redeemed at face value, particularly in the outlying altiplano markets where distrust of paper ran deep and silver coinage remained the preferred medium well into the twentieth century.

The American Bank Note Company held contracts across much of Latin America during this window, producing plates for competing Bolivian banks simultaneously.
