Bolivia redenominated its currency in 1987, replacing the peso boliviano at a rate of one million to one — the direct result of hyperinflation that had peaked at over 20,000% annually in 1985, one of the worst episodes in Latin American monetary history. The boliviano was introduced as part of the "Nueva Política Económica" under President Víctor Paz Estenssoro, whose stabilization program was drafted largely by economist Jeffrey Sachs.
Stainless steel was chosen for durability in a country where previous coinage had been destroyed by inflation-driven hoarding and melting. The type ran virtually unchanged across two decades of issue.
