Magnus II and Balthasar ruled Mecklenburg jointly following the division of the principality, a dynastic arrangement that produced some of the more administratively awkward coinage of the late 15th century. Joint-rule issues like this one required both names to appear on a coin weighing under half a gram — a genuinely tight technical problem for any die-cutter of the period. The blaffert itself was a small regional silver denomination circulating widely across northern German territories, distinct from the groschen tradition to the south.
