Ariminum — modern Rimini — was established as a Latin colony in 268 BC, the same year this series is thought to begin, making these bronzes essentially coeval with the colony's foundation. The city sat at the terminus of the Via Flaminia and served as Rome's principal gateway to the Po valley and the Adriatic coast, a strategic position that gave its coinage a circulation reach beyond what most allied mints could claim. The biunx denomination, representing two unciae, is among the less frequently encountered fractional values in the Ariminum series.
