Abbas I came to power in 1588 inheriting a Safavid state nearly dismembered by Uzbek raids from the east and Ottoman pressure from the west. His monetary reforms restructured the coinage hierarchy, with the bisti occupying the lowest silver denomination — a practical instrument of daily bazaar commerce rather than prestige issue. Ganja, situated in the southern Caucasus, was an active administrative and commercial center under Safavid control until its contested status made minting there politically significant.
The Ganja mint operated intermittently, and output attributable to Abbas I's long reign from this specific facility is notably sparse in major collections.
