| Obverse description | Right-facing bust of Emperor Menelik II occupying the central field, depicted with a full beard and wearing an elaborate jewelled crown adorned with an olive branch wreath, a beaded necklace visible at the truncation. The portrait is rendered in high relief in a finely detailed academic style, the work of engraver Alfred Scharff. A circular Ge'ez legend surrounds the effigy within a beaded inner border, with a decorative key-pattern border running along the outer rim. The emperor's title in Ge'ez appears at the base of the portrait. |
