| Obverse description | Right-facing draped bust of Emperor Menelik II wearing an elaborate imperial crown, rendered in high relief within a raised inner circle. The portrait displays fine detail in the emperor's beard and ceremonial robes. A circular Ge'ez legend surrounds the effigy, separated from the portrait by a decorative beaded border. The broad flat rim is plain and unadorned, characteristic of a pattern or essai striking. The design is the work of engraver Jean Lagrange of the Paris Mint. |
