| Obverse description | Right-facing draped bust of Emperor Menelik II, wearing an elaborately decorated traditional Ethiopian crown with ornate banding and a beaded border at the base. The emperor is depicted with a short beard, his attire featuring a finely engraved collar. The circular Ge'ez legend surrounds the effigy, reading from upper left through the field on both sides, with a small ornamental stop at the base below the truncation. The portrait, engraved by Jean Lagrange, displays fine relief modelling consistent with the high artistic standards of the Paris Mint. |

| Reverse description | Plain, largely uniface reverse trial die presenting the incuse mirror-image legend 'THALARI' impressed centrally across the field, indicating this piece served as a one-sided obverse trial strike. The flat, unfinished reverse field shows characteristic marks and toning consistent with a working die test, with no decorative border or additional design elements. The numeral '1' appears incuse above the main legend, denoting the denomination. The overall surface confirms this as a technical proof of the obverse die rather than a completed pattern coin. |
