The "Ethiopian Dollar" denomination — a deliberate bilingual compromise — reflects the political difficulty of introducing decimal currency into a country where the Maria Theresa Thaler had circulated as the de facto standard for over a century. The State Bank of Ethiopia itself had only been established in 1942, replacing the Bank of Ethiopia that collapsed during the Italian occupation, and this series was among its first attempts at a fully domestic paper currency infrastructure.
Bradbury, Wilkinson engraved this series at their New Malden works, the same facility handling currency for dozens of newly independent and semi-sovereign states through the 1950s.
