Obverse description Central field occupied by a large ornate quartered shield surmounted by a ducal crown, combining the arms of Montferrat and Mantua in a bold heraldic composition. The dexter impalement displays the characteristic Gonzaga quarters, while the sinister bears the Paleologus arms of Montferrat. The shield is framed within a beaded inner circle, with the Latin legend disposed around the periphery of the field. The die work is characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century North Italian hammered coinage, with pronounced relief on the crown and shield divisions.
