Obverse description The Portuguese royal shield, rendered in a crude hammered style, occupies the central field, enclosed within a border of large pellets. The shield displays the characteristic five-escutcheon arrangement of the Portuguese arms, typical of the Cochim mint's local production. The overall design is bold but shows the characteristic irregularity of hammered coinage struck in the colonial Indian workshop.
