| Beschrijving voorzijde | Within a beaded inner circle, a crowned thistle occupies the central field, its naturalistic head surmounted by a crown rendered in relief. The royal initials 'M' and 'R' (Maria Regina) appear to the left and right of the thistle respectively, flanking the device as monarchical identifiers. The surrounding legend, separated from the inner circle by a plain border, reads MARIA · D · G · REGINA · SCOTORV, proclaiming Mary's sovereignty by divine grace. The coin is struck on an irregular flan typical of mid-sixteenth-century Scottish hammered billon coinage, with the legend partially weak at the periphery due to the striking method. |
