Aargau gained cantonal status in 1803 under the Act of Mediation imposed by Napoleon, and its early coinage — including this 1807 Batzen — reflects the frenetic monetary reorganization of the Swiss Confederation during that period, when newly recognized cantons scrambled to establish independent issuing authority before federal standardization curtailed it.
