Additional information

Aargau gained cantonal status in 1803 under the Act of Mediation imposed by Napoleon, and its early coinage — including this 1807 Batzen — reflects the frenetic monetary reorganization of the Swiss Confederation during that period, when newly recognized cantons scrambled to establish independent issuing authority before federal standardization curtailed it. The "Large Date" designation distinguishes this die variety from the Small Date 1807 striking, a distinction tracked in the HMZ catalogue under 2#23d.
