Obverse description Central field features the quartered coat of arms of Neuchâtel, combining the diagonal bend of Orléans-Longueville with the chevrons of Neuchâtel, surmounted by a princely crown. The shield is rendered in the angular, stylized manner characteristic of early seventeenth-century hammered coinage. A Latin legend encircles the device, reading clockwise from the upper left, identifying the issuer as Henri of Orléans, sovereign Prince of Neuchâtel. Pellet stops and decorative rosette separators punctuate the inscription. The flan is irregular in shape, as typical of hammered production of this period.
