Ernest of Bavaria held the See of Passau from 1517 until his death in 1540, but his batzens bearing this type were struck only through 1529 — the likely date of a minting suspension tied to the disruptions of the early Reformation, which hit the Passau diocese with particular force given its geographic position on the Bavarian-Austrian frontier. The batzen itself was a South German silver denomination that had emerged around 1500 as a practical unit for regional trade, worth four kreuzer.
Ernest was the son of Duke Albert IV of Bavaria, and his appointment was openly political — a Habsburg-Wittelsbach accommodation over a strategically critical see.
