St. Gallen's cantonal coinage authority had a limited window after the Mediation Act of 1803 restored Swiss cantonal sovereignty, and these Batzen were struck during the final years before the Federal Concordat of 1819 pushed Switzerland toward monetary harmonization. The canton was notoriously slow to abandon its own issues, and pieces from the later end of this date range circulated alongside an increasingly chaotic mix of foreign and cantonal billon that Swiss merchants routinely discounted.
