Solothurn's 1805 Billon issue came at an awkward transitional moment — the Helvetic Republic had collapsed in 1803, and the Act of Mediation restored cantonal sovereignty, leaving each canton scrambling to re-establish its own monetary identity before Switzerland eventually unified its coinage system decades later. The dual denomination — Batzen and Rappen simultaneously — reflects the messy overlap of the old Batzen system with the decimal Rappen introduced under Helvetic influence.
