World Youth Day 2019 was held in Panama City — the first time the event had been hosted in Central America. Pope Francis attended, drawing an estimated 700,000 pilgrims to the final mass at Metro Park. Panama's decision to issue circulating commemorative coinage rather than a collector-only piece was a deliberate choice to put the event into everyday hands, which means well-worn examples already exist less than a decade out.
