Additional information

Panama's bimetallic balboa series, launched to celebrate the country's architectural and cultural heritage, placed the San José Church in Panama City on this 2019 issue. The church is notable for its gilded baroque altar — one of the few that survived the 1671 destruction of the original Panama City by the pirate Henry Morgan, reportedly saved by a priest who painted it black to disguise its value before the raid.
