Panama's 1 Balboa circulation bimetallic series, launched in the 2010s, was designed to replace the large-format dollar-sized coins that had previously dominated the denomination. Our Lady of Mercy — Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes — holds particular significance in Panamanian Catholic history, her church in the Casco Viejo district among the few colonial-era structures to survive the 1671 sacking and burning of Panama Viejo by Henry Morgan's forces, largely because the new city was founded at a different site.
