Aanvullende informatie

Enrico Caetani was appointed Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church and governed the Papal States during the sede vacante following the death of Sixtus V in August 1590 — a vacancy that proved remarkably turbulent, producing three further popes before the year was out. The Macerata mint struck coins in Caetani's name under his camerlengo authority, as was the established privilege of that office during interregna.

1590 remains one of the most numismatically dense sede vacante years in papal history, with issues from multiple short pontificates compressed into a single calendar year.
