Benedict XIV — Prospero Lambertini — was elected in 1740 after a six-month conclave deadlock, reportedly joking that the cardinals had chosen a saint (his predecessor) and now chose a fool. His papacy proved anything but: he reformed canon law, corresponded with Voltaire, and maintained the Papal States' finances with unusual pragmatism. The copper baiocco was the workhorse denomination of everyday Roman commerce, and Benedict's eighteen-year reign produced enough variants to keep die students occupied — the straight shield distinguishing this emission from the curved-shield issues that appeared across the same pontificate.
