| Reverse description | Three-line Latin denomination inscription VN / BAIOCCO / ROM centered within an open palm wreath tied at the base with a ribbon, the whole enclosed within a plain inner border. The milled edge frames the design. The abbreviation ROM denotes the Rome Mint as place of issue. The composition is restrained and typographically clear, consistent with Papal States copper coinage of the mid-eighteenth century. |

Benedict XIV — Prospero Lambertini — was elected in 1740 after a six-month conclave deadlock, reportedly joking that the cardinals had chosen a saint (his predecessor) and now chose a fool. His papacy proved anything but: he reformed canon law, corresponded with Voltaire, and maintained the Papal States' finances with unusual pragmatism. The copper baiocco was the workhorse denomination of everyday Roman commerce, and Benedict's eighteen-year reign produced enough variants to keep die students occupied — the straight shield distinguishing this emission from the curved-shield issues that appeared across the same pontificate.
