Thailand was under considerable pressure from European colonial powers, and adopting Western-style coinage was a deliberate diplomatic signal, not merely a monetary reform. The medal alignment, unusual for Siamese issues of the period, suggests European die-cutting involvement, most likely from the Birmingham trade.
