Rama V ascended the Siamese throne in 1868 at age fifteen, and the earliest years of his reign saw intense experimentation with Western-style coinage as the kingdom modernized its monetary system under pressure from expanding European colonial powers. Pattern issues from 1869 represent the exploratory phase before standardized coinage was firmly established — multiple compositions and alignments were tested, and very few of any individual pattern type are known to survive.
The coin alignment on this copper strike distinguishes it from medal-aligned counterparts in the same pattern series.
