Struck to mark Thailand's hosting of the World Health Organization's Southeast Asia Regional Committee meeting, this is one of several commemorative Baht issues commissioned under Rama IX that tied the monarchy directly to international institutional goodwill. The WHO series from this period was part of a broader Thai government strategy of using coinage to signal modernization and global engagement during a decade of considerable domestic political instability — the same year this coin was struck, a popular uprising ousted the military government of Thanom Kittikachorn in October.
