The Azadi series was introduced after the 1979 revolution as a direct replacement for the Pahlavi coinage, which had carried the Shah's portrait — politically untenable for the new government. The name itself, meaning "freedom" in Persian, was a deliberate rhetorical choice by the Islamic Republic. Production continued across the Iran-Iraq War years and well into the reform period, with the coins functioning primarily as a savings instrument rather than circulating currency, sold through Bank Melli branches at prices tracking the London gold fix.
