Tucumán's provincial australes were an emergency quasi-currency issued when the federal government's own Austral — itself a desperate anti-inflation measure introduced in June 1985 — failed to reach provincial workers and creditors fast enough. Several Argentine provinces issued their own notes during this period, but Tucumán's series is among the more documented, backed nominally by provincial treasury obligations rather than the Banco Central.
These circulated alongside federal currency at par by local convention, not legal mandate. Whether merchants actually accepted them at face value depended almost entirely on geography and political pressure.
