Barbarous imitations of Probus aurei were struck by Germanic groups operating beyond the Rhine and Danube frontiers, almost certainly for internal prestige and gift exchange rather than commercial transaction — the Roman monetary economy did not extend meaningfully into these territories. The weight of this piece, dramatically heavier than any official Probus aureus, places it outside the standard imperial weight system entirely and suggests the issuer was copying appearance, not denominating value.
